Once the first six words had been successfully read from the cards a few times, I pulled out the book.
“THIS is going to be the very first book you will read! Yes, you are going to read this whole thing, and I am going to help you. We don’t have to read it all today, but let’s just start with the first page.”
And that overwhelming first page is… “Mat,” which he had already read several times on a card. My kids loved that they were reading a real paper book, just like they see us do. This was no iPad game. This was real reading.
